KIC’s symbolic visit to Farm Estates Ltd
Directors of Kosmos Innovation Center paid what is seen as a symbolic visit to the farm of Farm Estates Ltd. on Wednesday, the first such visit by an individual or a group to the company’s farm to observe the start-up’s operations.
Having followed the Farm Estates Ltd journey from the outset and Impressed with the blemishless leafy greens produced on the farm, the KIC team instantaneously reassured themselves and expressed optimism about the module being run by the company and its capability to transform urban farming vis-a-vis the production of fresh local foods in Ghana.
Established in 2016 in Ghana, the Kosmos Innovation Center, a not-for-profit organization has designed programs focused on inspiring and empowering young entrepreneurs to drive change in their own country. It has thus since its inception focused on innovation in agriculture, a sector that employs most of Ghana’s population.
The union between Farm Estates Ltd and KIC
The union between Farm Estates Ltd and KIC started when the start-up participated in and emerged as one of the winners at the 2021 Agritech Challenge Pro and secured seed funding.
Since achieving that milestone, the team at Farm Estates Ltd has invested heavily in building what they describe as the next-generation cutting-edge vertical hydroponic farm in a bid to produce traceable and wholesome vegetables.
As an environmentally sensitive and progressive startup, Farm Estates Ltd is constantly looking for ways to maneuver the acutely limited access to growing space in urban farming, and vertical indoor hydroponic farming is but the perfect choice. It is a smart way of not only addressing climate concerns and huge savings in energy and water usage, but also designed to produce fresh local food to enhance food security.
Fruit vegetables such as tomatoes and bell pepper in addition to leafy greens like lettuce, are produced with a cutting-edge technology at Farm Estates.
The KIC visit is a major boost to the company’s reputation. It also sends a signal to the industry that the start-up has successfully ticked all the boxes and is ready to play a crucial part in the global urban farming ecosystem.
Holland Greentech
The buzz and prospects about the model being run by Farm Estates Ltd also attracted a team from Holland Greentech, a seed distributor for Rijk Zwaan, the primary supplier of highly sort after vegetable seeds to Farm Estates Ltd.
The seed distributor is in talks with the start-up for a future partnership. Produce from Farm Estates Ltd is expected to hit the shelves at your favorite supermarkets and farmer’s markets soon.
